Don Juan's story—"his own version"—is filtered through the consciousness of an anonymous narrator, a failed innkeeper and chef, into whose solitude Don Juan bursts one day. On each day of the week that follows, Don Juan describes the adventures he experienced on that same day a week earlier. The adventures are erotic, but Handke's Don Juan is more pursued than pursuer.

What makes his accounts riveting are the remarkable evocations of places and people, and the nature of his narration. This is, above all, a book about storytelling and its ability to burst the ordinary boundaries of time and space.
In this brief and wry volume, Handke conjures images and depicts the subtleties of human interaction with an unforgettable vividness. Along the way, he offers a sharp commentary on many features of contemporary life. Get A Copy. Hardcover , pages. Thankfully, they are usually short and facilitate rereading. So far I have read "Don Juan," his most recent book, only once and consequently reserve the right to revise both my rating and review later.
The narrator of this novel, who lives in Port-Royal-des-Champs, located in the countryside near Paris, is suddenly visited by Don Juan, who precedes to narrate his recent adventures.

These adventures are not told I have read enough Peter Handke to know that his books are best read at least twice. These adventures are not told as lurid sexual encounters, which is what we might expect from Don Juan, at least as he is usually portrayed, but are about timeless encounters with "woman"--encounters without repetition nor duration.

In fact, we are told, "For Don Juan time was a problem, the problem" p He is always departing, traveling on, for women represent danger. Still, everything Don Juan says seems made up for as the narrator reminds us: "In the end he seemed astonished at the turns his story was taking, as one perhaps becomes astonished at something one has experienced because in the telling it sounds more and more made up.
But in the end, I confess that this novel seems not entirely successful. At least this reader is not at all sure what Handke is saying in this short tome. Jan 29, Ivana de B. I stumbled upon a copy of this book fairly recently and got very excited about it since it was then recommended to me as a beautifully written novella filled with everything I love: mystery, sensuality and a fascinating protagonist.
I feel unchanged by it.
I expected so much more. Play Details Hypocrite and reckless libertine Don Juan moves from one intimate conquest to the next, abandoning multiple wives and deceiving countless others. Production Group Filter by Group Type.
